MUAR is one of the ancient towns of Johor where riches in many histories. The word Muar is from Malay language, the original is Muara.

According to the legend of AD 500-700 years , inside Sumatra, the Malay kingdom was very powerful. During that time, there were many trade caravans passed through Sumatra. One day, while passing through the estuary of Muar river, they found out the estuary is very wide so that they named it as "Muara". Therefore, the name Muar was borned.

In addition to the word Muara, there are also Muak and Mu'ar. The word Muak means tired of boating while travelling along the river. About this statement, we can refer to the historical records of Minangkabau. Then the word Mu'ar is from the Tamil language which means the bent river. No matter the name Muar is came from Muara, Muak or Mu'ar, all of the statement is related to the river.

On the other hand, Muar is also known as Bandar Maharani, which means Empress Town. It was proclaimed as the Royal Town of Johor's state.
