Women Helpline (WHL) is intended to provide 24 hours immediate and emergency response to women affected by violence through referral and information relating to government schemes & programmes across the country through a single uniform number.

Under the WHL Scheme, Department of Telecommunication, Government of India has allocated short code 181(Toll Free) to all States/UTs.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the Scheme are:

To provide toll-free 24-hours telecom service to any woman or girl suffering violence or in distress.

To facilitate crisis and non-crisis intervention to women/girls of all ages affected by any form of violence or abuse, details of the client/ aggrieved women are collected thereafter; provide assistance through referral to the appropriate agencies such as Police/Hospitals/Ambulance services, State/District Legal Service Authority (DLSA)/ One Stop Centre (OSC), etc. Some cases are also referred to Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) or Community Based Organisations (CBOs) depending on the requirement of the case.

To provide information about the appropriate support services, government schemes and programmes available to women and children as per requirement.

Any woman or girl facing violence within public or private sphere of life or seeking information about women related programmes or schemes.
