★ கி.பி. பன்னிரண்டாம் நூற்றாண்டில் கச்சியப்ப சிவாசாரியார் என்பவரால் எழுதப்பட்ட தமிழ்க் காவியம் கந்த புராணம் ஆகும்.

★ பதினெண் புராணங்களும் வடமொழியில் இருப்பவை. இவற்றுள், ஸ்கந்த புராணத்தின் சங்கர சங்கிதையில் சிவரகசிய கண்டத்தில் வரும் முதல் ஆறுகாண்டங்களின் தமிழ் மொழிபெயர்ப்பே கந்த புராணம்.

★ ஸ்கந்த புராணம் சிவபுராணங்கள் பத்தில் ஒன்றாகும். இது நூறாயிரம் சுலோகங்களால் ஆனது. அது ஆறு சங்கிதைகளைக் கொண்டது.

★ இதில் சங்கர சங்கிதையும் ஒன்றாகும். சங்கர சங்கிதையில் உள்ள பல கண்டங்களில் சிவரகசிய கண்டமும் ஒன்றாகும். இக்கண்டத்தில் ஏழு காண்டங்கள் காணப்படுகின்றன.

★ இவற்றில் உபதேச காண்டம் தவிர ஏனைய ஆறு காண்டங்களதும் தமிழ்த் தொகுப்பே கந்தபுராணமாகும்.

★ உற்பத்தி காண்டம், அசுர காண்டம், மகேந்திர காண்டம், யுத்த காண்டம், தேவ காண்டம், தட்ச காண்டம் என்று ஆறு காண்டங்களை உடையது.

★ இது 91 படலங்களையும், 10345 பாடல்களையும் உடைய இது முருகப்பெருமானின் வரலாற்றை முறையாகவும் முழுமையாகவும் கூறுகிறது

★ The Kanda Puranam (skanda purana or kandhapuranam) is the largest Mahapurana, a genre of eighteen Hindu religious texts.

★ The text contains over 81,000 verses, and is part of Shaivite literature,titled after Skanda, a son of Shiva and Parvati, who is also known as Kartikeya and Murugan.

★ While the text is named after Skanda, he does not feature either more or less prominently in this text than in other Shiva-related Puranas.

★ The text has been an important historical record and influence on the Hindu traditions related to the war-god Skanda.
