BMW (abbreviation for Bayerische Motoren Werke, or in English, Bavarian Motor Works), is a German automotive company that manufactures cars and motorcycles. BMW was founded in 1916 by Franz Josef Popp. BMW AG is the parent company of the MINI and Rolls-Royce car brands, and, formerly Rover. BMW is known as one of the luxury car companies with high performance, and also one of the first car companies to use ABS technology.

COMPANY HISTORY

BMW started its business after the restructuring of the aircraft engine maker Rapp Motorenwerke in 1917. At the end of World War I in 1918, BMW was forced to stop producing aircraft engines due to the Versailles Treaty. The company switched to producing motorcycles in 1923 after the agreement was loosened, and began producing cars in 1928/29.

In 1992, BMW acquired the industrial design studio company in California DesignworksUSA, and fully acquired in 1995. In 1994, BMW purchased the British automotive company Rover Group (where at that time there were the Rover, Land Rover and MG brands as well as the rights to the existing brand). no longer produced i.e. Austin and Morris) and owned it for 6 years. In 2000, Rover suffered a huge loss and BMW sold it. The MG and Rover brands were sold to the Phoenix Consortium to form MG Rover, while Land Rover was taken over by Ford. BMW eventually founded its own brand which he named MINI, which was launched in 2001.
