From the defines calligraphy as “decorative handwriting or handwritten lettering”, which is how many people perceive it. We like to also think of calligraphy as a discipline to playing an instrument whereby the practitioner has to develop the skill through constant practice and growth. Even though calligraphy, lettering and typography all use the same principles for spacing, consistency, weight and contrast to determine what is “good”, they are all distinct disciplines.
Calligraphic is a visual art related to writing. It is the design and execution of lettering with a broad tip instrument, brush, or other writing instruments. Contemporary calligraphic practice can be defined as the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious, and skillful manner. Modern calligraphy ranges from functional inscriptions and designs to fine art pieces where the letters may or may not be readable. Classical calligraphy differs from typography and non classical hand lettering though a calligrapher may practice both.
Calligraphic Font Ideas - Calligraphic fonts have been popular in the design world for a long time. But we don’t see hand lettered calligraphy nearly as often, outside of wedding invitations. Hand lettered calligraphy is beautiful and has an organic feel to it that’s often lacking in digital designs. Even hand lettering or sketching your designs prior to digitizing them can add a whole new warmth and style to your finished work.
Calligraphy in Islamic art - In the Islamic world, however, calligraphy has been used to a much greater extent and in astonishingly varied and imaginative ways, which have taken the written word far beyond pen and paper into all art forms and materials. For these reasons, calligraphy may be counted as a uniquely original feature of Islamic art. The genius of Islamic calligraphy lies not only in the endless creativity and versatility, but also in the balance struck by calligraphers between transmitting a text and expressing its meaning through a formal aesthetic code.
Type designers have to respond to the lowest common denominator. They have to consider an endless array of different letter combinations and design each letter accordingly to ensure that no matter the layout, the individual alphabet characters will meld together beautifully when strung together to create words or phrases. Think about how the words you're reading right now consist of the exact same letter formations, yet look seamless together. That's from the hard work of a type designer.
Another factor was the type of pen used, which was made from a reed. The nib was made by cutting the end of the reed with a knife. Different effects could be achieved by cutting the nib in different ways. The later, rounded scripts were written with a nib cut at an oblique angle, which allowed the calligrapher to create both thick and thin lines, adding elegance and variety to the script. The width of the pen was also important, wider nibs were needed for larger script so that the width of the line stayed in proportion to the overall size of the writing. A system of proportion based on the width of the nib also determined the shapes of the individual letters, and the relative sizes of the letters in a line of writing.
