It was at the behest of Monsgr Mcgarry T.O.R, the Prefect Apostolic of Bhagalpur that MOUNT CARMEL SCHOOL was founded. The then Superior General Mother Sylvia favoured this proposal with her consent and the Patna Women's college started this filial house, providing for all its initial requirements. Thus the pioneering group arrived on the 10th june 1958.They had neither house nor money, for the new school.

Monsgr Mcgarry lent them a small house that was bought for Franciscan Ashram at Mount Assisi.

There was acute shortage of accommodation. The house served as a school during the day and sister's quarter at night. MOUNT CARMEL was thus formally opened on 23rd June 1958 with 11 students. By December the number went up to 70. Bus transport was arranged in order to bring students from neighbourhood. However the school made very little progress and there was acute shortage of funds and accommodation. This led to the feeling that the school could not be maintained and it was on the verge of being closed.

A paying concert was put up in honour of the visiting Superior General Mother Theodosia A.C. The parents were so impressed and so was the distinguished visitor that sanction was granted to purchase land and to construct the building but the severe paucity of funds delayed the work and the question came up once again whether to continue the school at all. These are but teething problems of any institution and ours cannot be exempted.

There dawned a new ray of hope and no more negative feelings of any sort.

1961 - The land where the present building stands was bought with the help of Mr. Roderick. Mr. T.F.Lal & Mr. Himmatsingka.

1962 - The foundation stone for the present school on the new site was laid with the uniting efforts and selfless service of Sister Adella, Sister Roseline and all the other A.C Sisters.

1964 - The new school was ready and the strength went up to 400.

1965 - A boarding house was opened.

1966 - First batch of students appeared for middle school board examination.

1969 - First batch appeared for the matric examination. The results were gratifying and the number on roll went up.

Seventies produced new challenges. A large and very impressive extension was put up, so that CARMEL SCHOOL is now one of the best accommodating school in the district.

1975 - Bulbul and girls guide and school band was introduced.

In mid 80's the strength of the school increased which created a severe shortage of space. Thus the admission of boys were restricted. It could be fairly said now that the school is fully prepared for the young girls of Bhagalpur to face the educational challenges offered by the 21st century.

All the difficulties and obstacle faced by Mount Carmel during its earlier years have become a part of history and a stepping stone to success. From its very inception MOUNT CARMEL could be likened to a mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds, that has grown to enormous proportion due to, no doubt fruits borne of the constant efforts of the efficient administration, the staff and the parents/ guardians of this prestigious institution.

CARMEL is a garden and all the beautiful flowers that grew in it are spreading their fragrance all over the world as doctors, lawyers, engineers, educationists, administrators, politicians and above all as honest citizens imbued with the values of Carmel, true to the Carmel Motto "Through Love to Peace".
