When I was first starting out with crochet pattern book cover, I was 6 years old. Like most people I learned mainly from my mother and grandmother. They taught me the simple stitches and how to make granny squares. Since then I have poured over countless crochet books, articles, and such learning new designs, techniques, and patterns. I have compiled a portion of my knowledge into this article. I'm going to rule out the basic stitches such as the single and double crochet. I'm going to start by sharing one of my favorite stitches. It works well on all kinds of afghans and lap blankets. With this particular design you start out with a row of double crochet. On the next row you start with a double crochet right on top of the bottom row of double crochets as you normally would, but for the second stitch, you loop around the double crochet on the bottom row to make your double crochet. This makes the double crochet pop out in front of the rest of your work. You continue to do every other double crochet like this across. When you move on to the next row, instead of working in front, you will now be working behind the double crochets. This pattern makes a nice tight rippling effect. I used it on a Flag Blanket that I made and it doesn't take a lot of extra time to do.
Now that I've told you my secret behind my crochet genius we'll move on to types of yarn and hooks. If you are just starting out, my advice would be to stick to the classic Red Heart brand yarn. Not only is it cheaper than the "designer" yarn, it is a LOT easier to work with. After the basic yarn, I would move on to something more heavy duty like a wool material or something from the "bulky" collection. I like this yarn because if you are a beginner you cannot work very fast and the bulky cut your time by at least half. When using the bulky yarn, I would recommend going with a size K or higher hook. Just so we're all on the same page, hooks start from A and go to Z... or something like that. Anyway, the later the letter is in the alphabet, the bigger it is. I like loose works so I usually team my bulky yarn up with a size S. I like to make afghans a mile a minute though.
When choosing material for a specific project, it is crucial that you buy plenty of yarn of that color and dye lot that you will have enough to last through the end. It's not uncommon for me to spend anywhere from 20 to 45 dollars on yarn for a good afghan. There is nothing worse than spending all that time on the project and the money on the yarn and then you go back to the store and they have discontinued it or the dye lot has changed. If you're not familiar with dye lot it is actually the record to identify a group of yarn that was dyed at the same time. Yarn color can be changed slightly just from differences in dyeing time, temperature, and many other factors. You may not even notice the change or difference of the dye lot, but a few days may past and the color fades, or you may wash it and all of a sudden a section of your beautiful work of art is another color.
Finally, I want to talk about my newest favorite thing to crochet pattern book cover! I love to crochet purses because you can pick the color you want to use, the pattern you want to use, and the size you want it to be. Another good thing is you can use leftover yarn instead of going out to buy new. I have made handbags, clutches, and regular purses. I like to make up my own designs. You can even use the ripple stitch to make a fancy handbag. It's also a quick project that you can do in just one day.
