1. Strawberry cultivation:

Pakistan is producing a limited quantity of strawberries which are either eaten or used in preparing ice-cream, jam, jelly, pickle, cake or milk shake. The fruit fetches Rs100 to Rs120 per kg in big cities. Pakistan can also export it to Europe, the United States and Middle Eastern countries.

Timings: Early spring is an ideal time for planting as it ensures good development for increased productivity the following season.

Method: The main planting system used for strawberry cultivars is the matted row. Set the plants 11/2 to 21/2 feet apart in rows spaced 3 to 4 feet apart.

Inter-cropping: Fruit growers often find it economically beneficial to grow strawberries between the rows of young fruit trees until they become of bearing age.

Irrigation: Sprinkler irrigation is crucial to prevent frost damage in June bearing varieties after the mulch is removed in early spring.

Fertilizers: Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and other soil nutrients are required for vigorous crown and runner development. Soil tests will identify the nutrient needs.

Harvesting/marketing: Proper picking, grading, and packing are as essential as good cultural practices to success.

2. Isabgool (Chilka) Psyllium seed

Psyllium seed locally known as Spangur or Isphagool is the world famous medicinal crop. Most of the species of Isphagool grown in Pakistan and Sindh are used for medicinal purposes. This crop could betterly grown in Sindh Province as a cash crop, under water shortage conditions.

Psyllium seed, a herb originates from Iran, and history indicated its spread and travel from Asia to Europe. In Asia, psyllium seed was found in Arab world, Afghanistan, Egypt, North India, Sindh and Balochistan, where it was predominantly grown as medicinal herb.

Psyllium seed species: Psyllium seed, plantago ovata (Forsk) is widely grown species, which belongs to family plantagin aceae. The different species and types of Psyllium seed have their medicinal use. But, in some countries like North east America, local population used it as salad or vegetable, which could be possible emergency food.

Uses

The seed of spangur or Isphagool is important pharmaceutical or treatment point of view, which is quite successful treatment against heat, fever, thirsty, controlling blood pressure or stimulation in the body.

3. Know Thy Spice: Kalonji

Kalonji (Black Seeds and Black cumin in English) comes from Nigella sativa plant. The plant is known by many names around the world, including fennel flower, blackseed flower, and Roman coriander. Nigella Sativa is native to south East Asia and is an important kitchen ingredient in Pakistani and Indian homes, just like other spices Pakistan.

4. Olive in Pakistan Zaitoon

Olive was introduced first time in Pakistan by PARC during 1986 under an Italian Project titled “Fruit, Vegetable and olive Project” funded by Government of Italy. Under a five-year plan initiated in 2015, the agriculture department of Pakistan’s Punjab province is providing two million olive saplings free of charge to farmers in the Pothohar region. The aim of the Olive Valley Project is to develop the region as an olive-growing region and promote domestic olive oil production.
