Aging is a fact of life and it affects all families. As adult children, when imagining our parents as seniors, we may not fully comprehend the extent to which their aging will affect them or how it will affect us. Indeed, if they are already seniors and still in good health and living independently we may not feel any dramatic changes or concerns. However, the time does come when effects of aging become more evident and long-term care may be needed.

Health of the elderly

Elderly care or elderly care is the provision of special needs and distinct requirements for senior citizens. This term includes services such as living assistance, adult day care, long-term care, nursing homes (often referred to as residential care), elderly care, and home care. Because elderly care is widely spread internationally, as well as differentiating cultural perspectives on elderly citizens, it cannot be limited to a single practice. For example, many countries in the Asian continent use elderly care a very rare government institution, and they prefer traditional methods of caring for young family members.

Caring for the elderly emphasizes the social and personal requirements of elderly citizens, who need some help in performing daily activities and health care, but for those who wish to grow old while maintaining their dignity. It is an important distinction, in that housing design, services, activities and training of employees should be the right concern of the clients. It is also worth noting that many elderly care services around the world are done on a voluntary, unpaid basis.
