The Free Maritime Flags App is a useful app for seafarers who want to have easy access to all of the International Maritime Signals (ICS or International Code of Signals). It is also the ideal resource to help those who want to learn more about these types of flags and their meanings.

This maritime app includes the letters of the alphabet (and their ICS meaning), numbers, substitute and code and answer flags which sea vessels use to communicate with each other.

What flags are included in the free Maritime Flags App?

This maritime flags app includes:

1. The alphabet which is made up of the letter, phonetic name and flag meaning. The letters and their phonetic names are A (Alfa), B (Bravo), C (Charlie), D (Delta), E (Echo), F (Foxtrot), G (Golf), H (Hotel), I (India), J (Juliet), K (Kilo), L (Lima), M (Mike), N (November), O (Oscar), P (Papa), Q (Quebec), R (Romeo), S (Sierra), T (Tango), U (Uniform), V (Victor), W (Whiskey), X (Xray), Y (Yankee) and Z (Zulu)

2. Maritime number flags from 0 to 9.

3. Substitute and code and answer flags including First substitute, Second substitute, Third substitute and Code and Answer flags.

How are the maritime flags used?

Maritime or nautical flags can be used as signals in different ways. The flags represent letters and numbers, which means they can be used to spell messages using the letters they represent. Each of the maritime flags also has a meaning which is understood by other seafarers. Examples include:

- C (Charlie) means "Affirmative."

- D (Delta) means "Keep clear of me; I am maneuvering with difficulty."

- E (Echo) means "I am altering my course to starboard."

- F (Foxtrot) means "I am disabled; communicate with me."

- G (Golf) means "I require a pilot." By fishing vessels near fishing grounds: "I am hauling nets."

Single and multiple nautical flags can also be used to create code words that are listed in code books which are used by seafarers.
