This guide is designed to help new players, or players seeking to improve, to transition to the advanced levels of plays exhibited in the Smash tournament scene. I wrote this guide in anticipation of the pending influx of new players following the releases of Super Smash Bros. For 3DS and Super Smash Bros. For Wii U (referred in this guide as simply Smash 4), though the information in this guide can broadly apply to past Smash iterations as well (64, Melee, Brawl, and Project M).

In the competitive community and on the forums, you will see people discussing many concepts that you will need to understand and become fluent with if you wish to participate and compete at these more advanced levels. Information about these varied concepts and techniques are scattered, so hopefully, this guide will provide a convenient resource to address everything a newcomer to advanced play should know as they begin their enterprise of self-improvement.

Note that this is not a comprehensive guide; the explanations found herein are geared toward players that have an existing, broad familiarity of the game(s). If you are not a competitive player, you may already be generally aware of some of the topics covered in this guide, even if you don’t have a name to give them and/or haven’t given them much thought in the past. Since this guide serves only as an introduction, covering the basics in order to help you get started, more advanced reading will be required to gain detailed overviews on specific topics; you may find links to some of these specialized articles at the end of this guide.
