"The tragic story of Gamlet, Prinzotskom" (English The Tragical Historie of Hamlet, Prince of Denmarke) or simply "Gamlet" - the tragedy of William Shakespeare in five acts, one of the most known for his plays, and one of the most famous plays in the world of drama [1].

Written in the years 1600-1601. This is the longest play of Shakespeare - it has 4042 lines and 29 551 words.

The tragedy is based on the legend of a Danish ruler named Amletus, recorded by the Danish chronicler Saxon Grammatic in the third book of the Acts of the Danes.

And it is devoted primarily to revenge - in it the protagonist seeks vengeance of the death of his father.

As the researchers believe, the plot of the play is borrowed by Shakespeare from the non-preserved play of Thomas Kid, author of the play "The Spanish tragedy."

The last work could have an impact on Shakespeare's work, but there is an opinion that both could be based on an earlier work.

The most probable date of the compositions and the first production is 1600-1601 (Theater "Globe", London). The first performer of the title role is Richard Burbage; Shakespeare played the shadow of Hamlet's father.
