We all know that bicycles can be one of the hardest things to store in the garage. The problem is they are bulky and long. The bicycle hooks they have at the big box stores only allow you to mount the hooks where studs are located. This can add to the problem, you now have bikes hung every 16 in on the walls and the wall gets all marked up from the tires. The other wall mounted racks out there only hang the bikes perpendicular and not parallel. If you can only hang bikes perpendicular then I hope you have a very deep or wide garage. I know my garage was not built to store bikes in that direction. You need something that hangs it from the ceiling or parallel to the wall. This will save space and won't mark up the wall with rubber tread marks.

So I'm sure your asking what I can get that will hang a bike from the ceiling or parallel to the wall. Most products sit on the ground which doesn't fix the original problem. One product that comes to mind is a product by Racor, this bike lift hangs bikes from the ceiling using space not used in the garage and it has a clever pulley system to lower or raise a bike when needed. This product works great, a little tough to install, but once installed the big problem is solved. The only down side is if you have kids you will have to help them lower their bike from the ceiling.

My favorite product for bikes is the Monkey Bar Shelf System; this product allows you to hang the bike on a rack under the shelf allowing you to adjust the racks height from the floor and wall, for full versatility. This rack system allows you to hang the bike parallel or perpendicular to the wall. This product also is low enough that children can get their bikes down on their own.

Is your garage piling up with unmarked boxes, seasonal decorations and other items you can't remember even buying? Do you have a small walk through area or trench leading from your back door, through the garage and out to your car? Can you even park your car in the garage anymore or find a screwdriver when you need? If you answered yes to the pile up and clutter and no to finding anything, then its time to organize.

Imagine being able to park your car in the garage again and finding things quickly without searching for hours. It can be done with a little elbow grease and organizing. The garage was not built for clutter and debris, but as a place to store your car or for items you might use often, without having to climb in the attic or go down to the basement. Check out these ways to get your garage back in shape.

You will need to figure out what you want the garage for and what things you want out there. Will it be just a place for the car? Will it be a workshop or used to store items such as bikes, tools, decorations, and lawn equipment?

Make a list of all the items you want in the garage, and then use that list to map out areas in the garage you want those items placed. Make another list of the materials you will need to accomplish this such as hooks, shelving, storage bins, bike racks and an organizer for tools.

You'll need to set aside a specific time and date. Depending on how much clutter you have accumulated, it will probably be an all day job. Start from scratch, if you park your cars in the driveway, park them on the street for the day. Clear out the garage completely by putting everything out on the driveway. This will help you identify items you want and items you don't want. Once everything is out in the driveway, sweep the garage and clean up any spills.

Depending on how big your garage is, you might want to do some measuring. If you are going to park two vehicles in the garage, measure the length and width of each vehicle, remembering to give at least 2-3 feet on each side and in between the vehicles for getting out room. Measuring will show you just how much space you have to work with. Two cars equals less space, one car equals more space, and no cars equals even more space.
