Walls are a huge part of any design; they typically take up the largest square feet, in any project. A few pro's and con's about painting verses wallpaper. I bet you will soon see where I stand on the debate.
Wallpaper is seeing a renewing of popularity. I do have to admit some of it is beautiful, but the most amazing ones are very expensive, hundreds of dollars per room. It is time consuming to put it up and it takes someone knowing what they are doing.
First you must measure carefully, and calculated how many rolls needed. Prepare the walls, prepare your first piece, make sure it is perfectly straight and find the best spot to start (many considerations come into play here). Adhere the piece; get out air bubbles...over and over. Find a good friend; promise her breakfast, lunch and dinner, that's easily how long it will take.
Straight painting on the other hand is much less expensive rarely going. You do need to tape off parts of the room and put down drop cloths. Roll on the paint, let it dry. That's pretty much it. You can also get some amazing faux finishes, they get a bit more involved usually using multiple colors and roller or brushes. They can easily take up to a day to do, for the extra paint and supplies, and when you want to change it you simply paint over it!
Most often when you go into homes that are for sale with wallpaper, on the walls, it is a liability. Rarely does the taste of the old homeowner match the taste of the prospective new home owner. Keep that in mind when weighing which you want to do.
Compare, ease of installation and eventual removal, unless you want a very special high end look, then suck it up and go for the wallpaper, it will be beautiful.
