Bleta Rexha was born on August 30, 1989, in Brooklyn, New York to ethnic Albanians parents from Macedonia, who emigrated to the United States in the 1980s. Her father is from Debar and her mother is from Gostivar. Her first name, Bleta, means "Honey Bee" in Albanian, which is why she uses her nickname "Bebe". The family moved to Staten Island, New York, when Rexha was aged 6. In her elementary school, Rexha played a trumpet for over nine years, while teaching herself to play guitar and piano. Rexha attended Tottenville High School on Staten Island, where she took part in a variety of musicals. She also joined the choir, while still in high school. After joining the choir, she learned that her voice was a coloratura soprano
