The character of Jason Voorhees was first created by screenwriter Victor Miller. When asked by producer and director Sean Cunningham to write the Friday the 13th movie script, Miller then formulated the idea of a woman who committed serial killings because her young son was killed by negligence of the camp guard. Jason was the little boy. The name "Jason" in the corresponding character comes from a combination of the names of Miller's two sons: Josh & Ian. While the name "Voorhees" comes from the name "Van Voorhees", a big body girl known to Miller when they were both in high school.

The originator of the idea of Jason Voorhees's character is Miller, but who designed the appearance of the characters in question is Ron Kurz & Tom Savini. Based on the idea of Kurz & Savini, Jason's small version originally created as an ordinary child's figure was later modified into a child suffering from hydrocephalus (enlarged head syndrome) & abnormalities on his face. The design changes from Jason's own character is done so that the characters in question look more sinister in the eyes of the audience. In the movie "Friday the 13th", a small figure Jason never really appeared & only featured in the main character's dream.

The film "Friday the 13th" is a successful film in terms of financial because it managed to reap tens of millions of dollars in revenue only with the cost of making less than 1 million. The success then encourages Cunningham to make the film continued. In this film along with his follow-up films, Jason is shown life again as a big cold-blooded killer figure. Miller as one of the creators of Jason's character actually rejected the idea, but he could not do anything to stop it because he no longer plays a role in the creative team of making the film. As a form of protest indirectly, Miller refused to watch the sequel films "Friday the 13th".
