Lakshmi the goddess of wealth, fortune, and prosperity—both material and spiritual—is the wife of Vishnu and also his active energy. Lakshmi was born from the sagar manthan when divine celestial objects came up from the churning that was made possible by Vishu; as a giant tortoise Vishnu supported the mountain on his back throughout the churning. Lakshmi holds the four goals of human life that is essential to Hinduism: dharma, kama, artha and moksha. She, along with Saraswati and Parvati, form the trinity of Hindu goddesses. Pray to Lakshmi for prosperity and keep her close, for her presence is considered a lucky charm for any venture.
