Companion app for the 15th Conference on Location Based Services, held in Vienna, 11-13 November 2019

Who we are

Thank you very much for supporting this joint research effort of the Information Linguistics Group at the University of Regensburg (Universität Regensburg, Universitätsstraße 31, 93053 Regensburg, Germany) and the Research Division Geoinformation at the TU Wien (TU Wien, Karlsplatz 13, 1040 Wien, Austria) which is going to be conducted during LBS Conference 2019 (Nov. 11th-13th 2019).

What is this study about?

The application you just installed provides you with information about the LBS conference.

In addition to that, it allows you to search for routes and locations. We will log (see below) all your interactions and sensory information from your device whenever you use this application. The research interest we pursue is to understand how people attending conferences in general fulfil their information needs regarding the conference and how they orient themselves throughout the conference time. This is of interest to us in order to understand how we can build systems, which assist conference visitors. On the other hand, we are interested in background research on how we can derive, for example, low spatial confidence from smartphone sensors.

Which kind of data is collected?

Whenever you start the application, we will log all your interactions with the user interface of the application, for example

• Clicks

• Page views

• Zooming/panning/text-input of map

In addition to this, we will log the following values of your smartphone sensors to track your movements in space whenever the application is open:

• Location

• Orientation

• Acceleration

• Angular Velocity

• Magnetic Field

• Steps

• Wi-Fi

• Light

• Proximity

We will also ask you to fill in a mandatory demographic data survey (age, sex, spatial knowledge about the TU Wien and Vienna).

In addition to that, we kindly ask you to take time to fill-in a sense of direction survey (15 items) and a questionnaire regarding your personality (10 items).

All evaluations and presentations of results that are published or passed on to third parties are carried out in pseudonymised form. This means that we assign an ID to identify your data record, enabling us to merge different partial data records. Due to using these IDs it is very unlikely that someone would be able to determine your identity based on this data. The data collected are freely made available in pseudonymised form to the research community via open-access repositories.

All logged and survey data is stored in log files on your device. These log files will be compressed and transferred to a server hosted at the University of Regensburg via a state-of-the-art secured http connection in order ensure that third parties cannot read your data.
