Many English learners cannot distinguish between two sounds due to the fact that there are no similar sounds in their language. For example, the contrast between /l/ and /r/ in "lock" and "rock" is not noticeable for many listeners.

Minimal pairs have proved to be effective in overcoming this difficulty. They are pairs of words differ in only one phonological element; "lock" and "rock" is a minimal pair. By testing your ears frequently with feedback, you develop the ability to realize contrasts between two confusing sounds. The learning process is in spaced-repetition fashion, which significantly helps you in retaining learned information and allocating more effort to work on your weakness.
