Moai are stone monolithic statues on Easter Island in the Pacific Ocean. Currently, more than 900 statues are known.

It is believed that the statues were made by the island's aborigines between 1250 and 1500 years but there is no consensus on their movement around the island. The largest moai weighs more than 82 tons.

Most moai in the large-felled tahilitovom basaltic tuff or Tuffah quarry volcano Rano Raraku. It is not excluded that some of the statues also originate from deposits of other volcanoes in which there is a similar stone and they are closer to the installation sites. There is no such material on the Poike peninsula. Therefore a few small statues located there are made of local breeds. Several small statues are made of another stone from the red basaltic pumice of the Okhio volcano in the bay of Anaken and from other deposits from the Mujierite of the Rano Kao volcano. Last is particularly revered statue height of 2.42 m from the place of the cult of Orongo known as Hoa Haka-Nana-Ia. Since 1868, she is in the British Museum. Round cylinders of pukao (a bunch of hair) on the heads of statues are made from basaltic pumice pumice of Puna Pao volcano but possibly from the same material of closer deposits.

The Middle Age statues are an improved version of the smaller statues of the previous period. Contrary to popular belief the persons reproduced on them are not European but purely Polynesian. Excessively extended heads appeared due to a disproportionate stretching of the later monuments in the pursuit of ever greater heights. At the same time the ratio of the length to the width of the nose (from below) remained Asian.

Beginning with Hoa-Haka-Nana-Ya some of the Middle Age statues were carved. It includes a maro image on the back resembling an embossed bandage supplemented with a circle and an m-shaped figure. Paschalians interpret this figure as the sun the rainbow and the rain. These are standard items for statues. Other drawings are more diverse. On the front side there may be something like a collar although of course the figures are bare. Hoa-Haka-Nana-Ia at the rear also has images of oars ao vulva birds and two bird-men. It is believed that the images relating to the cult of the bird-man appeared already in the Middle period. One statue from the slope of Early Rakaku has on the back and chest images of a three-masted reed ship or according to another version a European ship. However many statues could not save their images because of the strong erosion of the soft stone. There were images on some cylinders of pukao. Hoa-Haka-Nana-Ya in addition had a coloring of dark maroon and white paint, which was washed away when moving the statue to the museum.
