1. Importance of Morals in Society

Dewey proposed that a successful society requires moral individuals who are more interested in working together and less interested in outdoing their fellow citizens. He argued that citizens with morals are action-oriented individuals who carry out well-intentioned plans. He believed that individuals should still strive to better themselves in an attempt to incrementally reach their individual potential. However, he reasons that people should also have the betterment of their society as a goal in mind and not be simply motivated by being able to claim superiority over others. This ability can help a person learn how to determine if and when they should step up as a leader and conversely, how and when they should be a follower.

2. School's Role in Society

Dewey stated that schools are public businesses with the “power to modify the social power”. Therefore, all citizens have the right to comment and vote on the broad policies that determine how schools should operate. However, he also explained that teachers, principals, and all other public educators need to be treated like professionals. The majority public can provide input into a school's general plans but the details for how educational institutions will execute those plans should be determined by the individuals in society who have chosen education as their profession. In short, Dewey wanted society to offer education professionals the same level of respect given to other professionals (e.g. lawyers, doctors, engineers, etc.…). He also made it a point to illuminate the contradiction between expecting schools to train students to grow up to be free citizens in a self-governing society when that same society does not allow schools to self-govern themselves.
