Longitudinal Magnetization (Coil Shot), multiple formulas are used to determine proper use of amperages. For years’ people have struggled with these formulas due to not having a strong math skill or simply not knowing witch formula to use.

There are 4 formulas to use:

1- low fill factor at coil side wall

2- low fill factor at center of coil

3- Intermediate fill factor

4- High fill factor

How do you know when to use Low, Intermediate or high fill factor? Choosing the right formula is due to the cross section of your coil and the cross section of your part. Since not all coils are of the same size or number of turns, these formulas can get complicated to use.

Did you know that to use Intermediate fill factor formula you first have to calculate for low and high fill factor then calculate the cross section of your part and your coil, put that all together and then use the formula for Intermediate fill factor coil, by this time you have used 3 formulas to then use one more get to the answer for Intermediate fill factor.

This application will do all the calculations for you, by only having to input the radius of your coil, the number of turns in your coil, then simply input your length and diameter.

These formulas work if the L/D Ratio is between 2 and 15, this application will show you what your L/D Ratio is and depending on your coil size it will also show you if you should use Low, Intermediate or High fill factor.
