In Judaism, Obadiah is considered a “later prophet” and placed in the last section (Nevi'im) of the Tanakh, where it is one of the "Twelve Prophets". Who was Prophet Obadiah?
According to the Talmud, Prophet Obadiah is said to have been a convert to Judaism from Edom, and a descendant of Eliphaz, the friend of Job. He is also identified with Obadiah the servant of King Ahab. Obadiah is supposed to have received the gift of prophecy for having hidden the "hundred prophets" from the persecution of Jezebel (1 Kings 18:4). The date of his ministry is unclear due to textual and historical ambiguities, but is believed to be around 586 BCE, shortly after the Babylonian Exile. Obadiah is regarded as a saint by several Eastern churches, including the Eastern Orthodox Church. His name means “servant of Yahweh”.
