The material for Defoe's novel was the description of the stay of the Scottish boatswain Selkirk on an uninhabited island in 1704-1709. Defoe chose for his Robinson the same places and the same nature, among which lived Selkirk; but if the latter was wild on the island, then Robinson morally revived. [3]

In August 1719, Defoe released a sequel - "Further Adventures of Robinson Crusoe," and a year later - "Serious Thoughts by Robinson Crusoe," but only the first book entered the treasury of world literature, and it is with this new genre concept - "Robinsonade".

The novel "Robinson Crusoe" gave rise to the classic English novel and gave rise to fashion for pseudo-documentary fiction; it is often called the first "genuine" novel in English [4]. Roman, however, changed the circle of readers and became a children's book. By the number of copies published, long occupied an exceptional place not only among the works of Daniel Defoe, but also in the book world in general [3]. In Russian, for the first time it was published under the title Life and Adventures of Robinson Cruz, a Natural Englishman (1762-1764).
