******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY ********************

Samba is a musical genre and dance that originated in Bahia, Brazil, with roots from Africa through the West African slave trade as well as African religious traditions particularly in Angola and the Congo. In terms of etymology, some claim Samba originated from the Arabic words Zumba or Zamba. Others say it originated from the African language Kimbundu and the Kimbundu "semba", which is a dance form and music style that was actually one of the precursors of samba). The word semba comes from “Masemba” which means “a touch of the bellies” an action that defines the Semba dance. Meanwhile, Brazilian folklorists have opined that the word samba came from the Kikongo word Semba, translated as umbigada in Portuguese, which means "a blow struck with the belly button".

Traditional Samba instruments include strings (cavaquinho and various kinds of guitar) and numerous percussion instruments like the tamborim. With the influence of American orchestras since the Second World War and the cultural impression of US post-war music, samba also made use of trumpets, trombones, choros, clarinets, and flutes.

Samba is widely recognized across the world as an image of Brazil as well as the Brazilian Carnival and is considered one of the most popular Brazilian cultural expressions. The Bahian Samba de Roda (dance circle), UNESCO’s 2005 Heritage of Humanity, is the origin of the samba carioca which is the samba that is danced and performed in Rio de Janeiro.
