Simply Equal Education began in 2008 when the co-founders (Amanda Malamut and Caitlin McGee) spent a semester studying abroad in Equatorial Guinea. While in country, they spent time volunteering at a primary school in their neighborhood, Pre-Escuela Mama Celina. While working in the school, they realized three things. First of all, although public primary schooling is supposed to be free, the cost of supplies, fees and uniforms often inhibit families from sending all of their children to school.

Second, children in the United States do not often understand their ability to have a role as an active agent of social change. Third, they wanted to do something about it.They then started Simply Equal Education to help children worldwide learn about what it would be like to grow up in a developing country, and to send supplies to some of the schools that need them the most. Simply Equal Education runs free global workshops for schools or organizations to help children understand what their role could be as an active agent for social change.
