Most watches are manufactured with stainless steel, but an increasing number of timepieces feature titanium cases. The popularity of titanium watches has increased because it’s a lightweight metal about 50 percent lighter than stainless steel, and it is resistant to corrosion. Sports-style watches marketed for wear in the water are often made of titanium.

A stainless steel watch can get scratches on it just like a gold or titanium watch can. Besides the metal getting scratched, the watch crystal can become marred, too. Deep gouges need the services of a professional jeweler to repair them. When it comes to light to moderate scratches, you can remove those yourself. All you need is a good-quality metal polish. If the watch crystal is made of acrylic, you can polish it to remove scratches, too.

Hold the stainless steel watch firmly in one hand with the reverse side up. Apply a small amount of the metal polish onto the applicator pad that's provided. Or, use a clean, soft cloth. Rub the polish onto the scratches on the band in a gentle manner, according to Pinnaclesupplies.com. Rub it on in a small, circular motion to make it easier to apply. Continue to rub the scratches until they disappear.

Apply more metal polish to the pad or cloth as needed. When you're done with one area, move down the watch band to the next section. When you're finished, use a clean cloth to buff the stainless steel to a shine. Rubbing with a fresh cloth will also remove any excess polish.

Turn the watch over and repeat Steps 2, 3 and 4 to remove the scratches from the front. When you're finished, you can also polish the watch crystal in the same manner. Just make sure the polish is suitable for the material the crystal is made of.
