The Last of the Mohicans - a historical novel by the American writer James Fenimore Cooper, first published in 1826. The Last of the Mohicans is the second book in the pentology about the Leather Stocking (both by publication date and the chronology of the epic), in which Cooper narrates about life on the American frontier and one of the first depicts the originality of the spiritual world and customs of the American Indians. The Russian translation of the novel The Last of the Mohicans was made in 1833. The novel was screened many times, including the most famous version of 1992, directed by Michael Mann.

In the allegorical plan, The Last of the Mohicans is used to describe the last representative of any dying social phenomenon or group, a supporter of any ideas that have become obsolete, etc. The novel takes place in the British colony of New York in August 1757, in the height of the Franco-Indian War. Part of the novel is dedicated to the events after the attack on Fort William Henry, when, with the tacit consent of the French, their Indian allies carved out several hundred surrendered English soldiers and settlers. Hunter and Pathfinder Natti Bampo, presented to the reader in the first (in the order of the development of the action) novel "St. John's wort," along with his fellow Indians from the tribe of the Mohicans - Chingachgook and his son Unkas - participate in the rescue of two sisters, daughters of the British commander. At the end of the book, Uncas, the last of the Mohicans, dies in an unsuccessful attempt to save Cora, the eldest of the daughters.
