novel entitled, The Song of Achilles. Based on Homer’s Iliad, tells the story of Patroclus during the Greek Heroic Era. The novel looks at the history of Patroclus and Achilles from their first meeting to their adventures in the Trojan War and is especially focused on their romantic relationship. An award for the Orange Prize for Fiction was given to The Song of Achilles in 2012.

Several potential suitors are brought to Helen, including Patroclus, the son of King Menoetius. In defense of her marriage to Menelaus, he is required to take a blood oath. The result is Patroclus being exiled to Phthia where he meets Achilles, the son of the king and the sea nymph of Phthia. Patroclus develops feelings for Achilles while they become close friends. When Thetis decides that a mortal of low social standing would not be the ideal companion for her son, she sends Achilles to train with Chiron for two years. But Patroclus eventually succumbs to her decision and joins Achilles in his training. Relationships grow as they grow together.

Agamemnon, king of Mycenae and Achaean state, invites the various Achaeans to join his military operation against Troy, where his brother Menelaus’ daughter Helen has been kidnapped by the prince of Troy. As a prophecy foretold that Achilles would die in Troy after killing Hector, Thetis forced Achilles to marry Lycomedes’ daughter Deidamia, who later bore Neoptolemus, after hiding him on Skyros.
