The War of the Worlds - a novel written by Herbert Wells in 1897 and describing the invasion of aliens (Martians) on Earth. The plot of the novel was prompted by the writer's brother - he is dedicated to The War of the Worlds. This is the first novel that raises the theme of enmity between people and aliens. For the first time the magazine text of the novel appeared in the publication "Pearson's magazine" in April 1897.

The novel The War of the Worlds was released as a separate book in February 1898 by Heinemann. The narration is from the first person of the nameless protagonist, a resident of Victorian England early XX century.

Events unfold in and around London: the towns of Horsell and Woking County of Surrey. It all begins with increasing public interest in Mars. A few years before the events began, astronomers recorded a strong flash on the surface of Mars. The main character visits the observatory and observes the celestial bodies approaching from Mars. Further, numerous observers in England notice the fall of celestial bodies to the surface of the Earth, which most take for meteorites. The War of the Worlds is the fourth novel by HG Wells, and refers to his early works. As researchers of creativity admit, the idea of ​​the book was worn in the air, and Wells was inspired by several circumstances that coincided at the end of the XIX century. In 1877 and in 1892, astronomers had the opportunity to observe Mars in detail during his great confrontation. It was then that the satellites of Mars were discovered, polar caps and a system of so-called channels on the surface of the planet were studied in sufficient detail. In 1896, the famous astronomer Percival Lovell published a book, which suggested the possibility of life on Mars.
