The flag of Uruguay consists of nine horizontal stripes where for of them are blue and five are white. Moreover, the upper left part of the flag is adorned by so-called Sun of May with human face and sixteen rays - eight straight and eight wavy. Nine stripes indicate nine Uruguayan provinces, which were created after the liberation from Brazil in 1828. Prior to Brazilian domination, Uruguay was also ruled by Spanish and Portuguese, and it was called "Banda Oriental" (East Coast). The Sun of May should remind gaining the independence, which took place in May. The design of the flag is probably influenced by the style of American and Argentine flag.
