Vels Group of Institutions, run by the Vaels Educational Trust, a charitable and non-profit organization, was established in 1992 by Dr.IshariK.Ganesh to commemorate the fond memory of his father late Shri.IsariVelan, a Former Deputy Minister Govt. of Tamil Nadu.The objective of Vaels Trust has ever been taking education to the humble threshold of first generation learners and weaker sections of the society.

VELS INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND ADVANCED STUDIES (VISTAS) has been established under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act 1956, Government of India, New Delhi in 2008. The university is a multi-disciplinary university offering varied and innovative courses in emerging areas. The deemed university offers 47 under graduate, 41 post graduate programmes and 23 Diploma and Certificate Programmes of contemporary relevance, M.Phil. and Ph.D., programmes in all the departments. All the courses are approved by statutory bodies such as AICTE, PCI, NCTE, D.G.Shipping and Bar Council of India. To promote a student-friendly learning environment, the University follows the semester pattern, Credit System and Choice Based Credit System in its entire academic programmes. VISTAS has been accredited by NAAC. The policy on enrolment is to ensure that students from all parts of the country are permitted to join the University so that the national characteristic of the University is maintained in its true sense and 11500 students are studying in the university. The University has a total strength of 620 teaching staff and 434 non-teaching staff. The University is well equipped with ICT facilities such as Smart class rooms, Video Conferencing, Online courses Vels Knowledge Resource Centre, Centre for Advanced Research and Development(CARD), Vels Incubation Centre and Vels IPR Cell.

The university aims at innovative syllabi and new courses and hence the revision of curricula is a continuous and an on-going process. The revision is initiated by the faculty depending on the requirement and approved by Board of Studies of the concerned School / Department. With the view to implement decentralization in administration , the academic departments have been clubbed under different Schools - 1) School of Basic Sciences, 2) School of Life Sciences, 3) School of Computing Sciences, 4) School of Engineering, 5) School of Maritime Studies, 6) School of Management Studies and Commerce, 7) School of Pharmaceutical Sciences 8) School of Hotel & Catering Management, 9) School of Mass Communication, 10) School of Physiotherapy, 11) School of Languages, 12) School of Ocean Engineering 13) School of Law, 14) School of Education and 15) School of Music & Fine Arts and Department of Aviation.
