Kempo is a generic name for some martial arts streams that come from Japan and many use hand games. So it is not the name of a single stream but the name of many streams and methods. The meaning of Kempo itself is a martial arts game (in Chinese called Quanfa).

Tenshin Koryu Kempo, a martial art that is hundreds of years old since before the Tokugawa era (Meiji Era). The last great teacher of this genre is Ueno Takashi. Nihon Kempo, a modern martial art created by Master Masaru Sawayama. A unique martial art and a combination of kick-kick techniques from Karate with the techniques of kickback and struggle from Judo and Jujutsu. It has now become a popular sport in many countries.

Kosho-ryu Kempo, martial arts from generation to generation of the Mitose family. The last grandmaster of this school was Masayoshi Mitose who later sent his knowledge to his American students. So the Kempo flow is known by the name of American Kenpo Karate.

Shorinji Kempo, a martial art originating from ancient China created by Bodhidharma (Dharma Taishi or Tatmo Cowsu) a Buddhist monk to be given to a bikhsu candidate as a religious education on Zen Buddhism, in 550 AD, spread after World War II by So Doshin.
